After photographing weddings for 22 years, both traditional Minnesota weddings and intimate destination elopements, I realized my strength is interacting with people, making them feel comfortable, and helping them look their best through subtle but confident posing guidance, but honestly… my passion lies in documentary style photography. Where little to no posing is used. It’s just observation and quick reaction. The posed wedding portraits are necessary and certainly serve a purpose, (I know I would want some to hang on my wall and share with my family) but the real moments are so fun to reflect on, and they trigger so many emotions that only get stronger as the years passed.

Similarly, the presence of a camera can influence how people act and how events unfold – even though it may not be the photographer’s intention. Additionally, documentary photography can have an indelible impact on the course of history as we know it. What the documentary photographer chooses to show (and, equally, what they choose to leave out) is important – because often that’s the story that takes root in our collective memory.
